Since 2002, CBT Associates has helped thousands of people become happier and more productive by helping them overcome feelings and behaviours that negatively impact their everyday lives.
Our founding Clinical Directors, Dr. Eilenna Denisoff and Dr. Peter Farvolden, were previously working in the Mood and Anxiety Program and the Clinical Research Department at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
They opened their practice together in response to overwhelming demand for the kind of high-quality, evidence-based psychological treatment that was not available in the public hospital system. Their experience demonstrated that cognitive behavioural therapy was tremendously effective in helping people to overcome a range of problems and achieve a healthier and more balanced approach to life, but access to this treatment was a challenge.
Over the past decade, the practice has expanded to meet this need and today we consist of a team of psychologists and psychotherapists that provide the highest level of care from two locations in the Greater Toronto Area. This group practice approach allows us to provide access to the broadest base of clinical expertise and therefore the most personalized approach for the best outcomes.
Today, CBT Associates provides personalized, compassionate, respectful and discreet treatment with the utmost of professional care, focusing on leading-edge, evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help children, adolescents and adults of all ages in sessions for individuals, groups, couples and families.
The spirit of our approach is active, compassionate, and genuine. Whatever challenges you are experiencing, we’ll listen closely and work with you to develop a treatment plan that works for you.
Our registered psychologists maintain the highest standard of clinical care. All have been trained at top universities and are affiliated with teaching hospitals and universities. Our team also consists of psychological associates, as well as psychologists in Supervised Practice, and individuals who are completing their PhDs in Clinical Psychology. Depending on the level of training of the therapist you wish to see, you may be eligible for special rates and pricing.
Our therapists have deep experience across a broad range of areas of specialty. We will match you with an experienced clinical psychologist who has the training, knowledge and skills to focus on your unique needs.
Our GTA-based locations provide you with convenient options for in-person visits. We currently provide service in Downtown Toronto and North York. We also provide secure telepsychology (secure online video) throughout Ontario, and Guided CBT Program is available nation-wide.
As psychologists, we are trained to be scientific-practitioners. This means that our practice is guided by the best evidence provided by current research on what works for common problems. The treatments and techniques we employ have been shown to be the most effective in reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life for people experiencing anxiety, mood, stress and relationship problems. Through our evidence-based practice, we strive to integrate the best research and methodologies with our clinical expertise and our clients’ values.
Our team includes therapists who practice in some non-English languages. Both locations offer services in English, with more options at select locations. Please contact us to see if we can accommodate your request for sessions in a language other than English.
Our psychologists have doctoral degrees in psychology and specialize in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of problems related to people’s emotions, thoughts and behaviours. We all have advanced training in psychotherapy and the science of behaviour change. Although we may be trained in understanding the use of medication to treat mental illness, in Ontario we are not licensed to prescribe medications.
In Ontario, psychologists are regulated health professionals and have more training in the assessment and psychological treatment of mental health problems than any other profession – at least nine years and 3,500 hours of supervised clinical experience – before we join the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
To become a psychologist in Ontario, the College of Psychologists requires a practitioner to have:
Psychologists are trained to assess problems accurately using psychological tests and semi-structured interviews. These scientifically validated techniques enable us to understand people’s problems and provide informed, evidence-based solutions. Arriving at an accurate diagnosis is essential to effective treatment for most problems.
Psychologists are trained to use psychological treatments (evidence-based talk therapy) to help people overcome their problems. In fact, psychologists have more training in psychotherapy by far than any other regulated health professional.
As scientist practitioners we understand that our training never ends. At CBT Associates, we continuously attend courses, workshops and conferences and consult our peers in our dedication to life-long, ongoing professional education and training.
CBT Associates is not an emergency or crisis service.
In the event of an emergency or if you are in crisis, you should call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
